Low-tech is High Impact when it comes to Marketing

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

As a small business owner, I had limited options as far as advertising goes. I did not have a big budget to work with, and to me, every customer counted. I knew that advertising was imperative to building up clientele but I wasn’t sure which advertising avenue to explore. I owned a smaller deli that was successful, and I wanted to start offering catering services in order to make some more money. The deli business was going great; I had regular customers coming in for sandwiches and soups all the time. I really wanted to spread the word about my catering services because catering orders brought in a higher volume of sales.

I stuck with what I knew, I wanted to offer catered lunches for local business and for other functions. I developed a menu, calculated reasonable pricing options and packages, and decided that I really needed to get out there and advertise my new services.

I looked into a few different advertising options. I wanted to grab the attention of places that would offer catered lunches such as schools and businesses. I went out to several of these locations handing out menus to receptionists at the front doors, but no one called.

I decided on trying out some outdoor advertising. I had a few large professional signs made and I placed them in a few particular locations. I put one right out in front of my store on the street front so that passing motorists could see it easily as they drove past. The location of my deli was right in the middle of town, but the store front itself was slightly recessed from the street, it was the prime location for outdoor advertising. The sign optimized the location and brought attention to my deli.

I placed the next sign out on the corner of the entrance to a business park. I figured that it was another great location to get the attention of some of the potential clients that I was looking for. Then, I went to the neighborhood school and placed a few more of my signs out making sure that I wasn’t breaking any laws concerning their placement. I ended up having to put the signs a little ways away from the actual school building but along the main road to the school.

These outdoor advertising techniques worked out perfectly. Within one week I had booked five different catering lunches. Three were from the business park and two were from the schools.

Strong plants need light – get it to them

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

When you’re growing plants inside, sometimes natural light simply is not enough. Especially in the winter and in homes that have a lot of shade, natural light can be weak and sparse, sometimes causing plants to lose their vibrancy, shed leaves, and become sickly.

Indoor plants need a helping hand, an extra instillation of ultraviolet light so they grow strong, bright and healthy. There’s no reason plants shouldn’t enjoy a vivid state of well-being, even in the middle of winter. Picking the right LED grow light depends on space considerations, how many house plants need the light, and the availability of natural sunlight.

Light consists of different frequencies, with the variety of colors dependent on the wavelength of the frequency. Plants absorb certain frequencies at various growing stages, discarding any light frequencies they don’t need. LED light, however, is ideal for plants, presenting the optimal amount of frequency for plants to flourish. The light waves are infrared, invisible to the human eye. Grow LED lights don’t contain a filament, and thus don’t have the heat properties of traditional lights, so they don’t dry out the soil or overly exhaust the plants.

LED lights come in a variety of wattages, depending on your needs, whether you have a large area or a more specified space. 45 watts is ideal for an area of several feet, while 14 watts will serve a smaller space of a couple of feet. 300 Watts are very powerful and more in the commercial range, ideal for greenhouse-size operations.

LED lights are extremely long lasting (up to 50,000 hours), so you not only get your money’s worth for the plants, but they are better for the environment. They also don’t require heavy ballasts. The mounting systems are light, easy to set up and much more functional than those of traditional lighting systems.

LED lights also feature built in reflectors, so you can focus the light fully on the plant without having to bother with an outside, added reflector.

Indoor plants sometimes need an extra boost of light in order to maintain their vibrancy. LED lights provide optimal ultraviolet light, the exact frequencies needed for plants to prosper. They also provide the most convenient options in terms of mounting, and their long lasting life makes them not only more affordable, but environmental as well.

An LED lighting system will give your plants an added boost of light frequency. Their long lasting durability makes it an investment that pays back with time, resulting in healthy, vibrant plants year-round, even in the dead of winter.

High speed internet improves productivity

During the toughest times in the business cycle – a cycle that has been amplified by the effects of the real estate crash in southern California – owners of businesses of all sizes ought to be doing whatever it takes to trim down on the cost of their products, the costs of administering their business, and the costs of holding inventory. Only after a campaign of prudent cost-cutting can businesses afford to begin strategizing for the future.

To cut down on the cost of products, businesses can reduce workforce or find cheaper components for whatever it is they’re manufacturing if they aren’t in the service business. For Hollywood movie producers, this has implications, just as it does for Downtown apparel manufacturers: to reduce the cost of a final product, a producer chooses less expensive actors just as an apparel manufacturer will try to find less expensive fabric and less expensive ways to stitch it together (fewer employees on the production line?) By improving cross margins, pressure on operating margins is greatly reduced and the business is repositioned to really thrive in climates conducive to high operating profitability.

One of the best ways that businesses in and around LA can reduce their administrative expenses is by getting telecommunication expenses under control. This means shopping around for a Los Angeles broadband provider that will be able to integrate VOIP solutions into your package, which can save businesses up to a thousand dollars a year per employee on phone service over a hosted PBX or other phone company solution, depending on how many phone calls you make. Choosing a locally-based provider all makes a fair bit of sense from a service aspect; dealing locally means that there will be someone who is accountable for your service and present to endure your wrath should anything go awry – a great incentive to get things working again quickly. Other ways of dealing locally that can save on administrative expenses are seeking out the best prices on electricity and office supplies like paper as well from smaller, local vendors who are able to supply discounts in return for a large purchase from you.

Lastly, reducing the cost of inventory – the interest or opportunity cost of capital tied up in inventory – is crucial to success. Whether your business is a lawfirm and your inventory is ‘billable hours’ or your business makes shoes, reducing the quantity of inventory you’re holding and not discounting accounts receivable is a smart way to keep cash flow positive.

Of all the methods to save money for small businesses, finding a Los Angeles broadband service to save your money on your phone and internet bills is by far the easiest. Any smart business owner has a fiduciary responsibility to make a change to a more affordable provider.

My home shopping story

Saturday, February 21st, 2009

I recently moved to the City of Chicago as a result of a job transfer. I was from a very small rural town and completely naïve when it came to living in a large metropolitan area. I decided that it would be in my best interest to rent an apartment for at least six months upon my initial arrival before purchasing a condominium Chicago had for sale. I figured that I needed the time to gain knowledge about the city and its real estate market.

This was a very smart decision on my part. My office was located in a more expensive neighborhood that would have caused a financial strain if I had purchased a condo within its immediate vicinity. Luckily, after a few long walks around the neighborhood I found that property a few blocks to the west was significantly cheaper to buy.

I then realized the importance of living close to public transportation. Driving around the city was stressful, and finding parking was near impossible at some locations. If I wanted to get out around the city I needed to be close to transportation so that I could shop and find entertainment with ease.

When winter came I realized that it was imperative that I found a condominium Chicago had with indoor parking. Spending two hours digging my car out of a snow drift was enough winter fun for me.  I needed to find a condo that offered indoor parking.

Then I decided to visit some of my co-workers condos so that I could see firsthand some of the options that were available. One of my co-workers had a great outdoor balcony that offered a spectacular view of the city. Another co-worker had a huge master suite with a walk-in closet and master bathroom. I loved the idea of having a great master bed/bath inside a condo.

So, in those six months I learned a lot. I knew that I could get a bigger condo for less money if I looked in different outlying neighborhoods. I knew that I needed to find a condo within walking distance to public transportation that offered indoor parking. I also knew what kind of lay-out and interior features that I wanted. I’m so glad that I took the time to move into the neighborhood and explore it before I purchased anything. I was able to find the perfect condominium Chicago had on the market to suit all of my needs.

When it comes to improving appearance, many people think that the cost of most cosmetic procedures are not worth the pain of the surgery and recovery, the possibility of mistakes, and high price tag placed on all but the most basic of cosmetic procedures. What most don’t realize is that the cost for a total smile makeover can be a lot less time than years at the gym and a lot less money than plastic surgery. Your face is what people look at and your smile is the focal point for your face.  Your smile is the feature most expressive of your personality.  It is obvious that a smile makeover can have an astonishing impact on your overall appearance as well as your feeling of health and happiness. Indeed, most recipients of smile makeovers remark that they feel like new people and are perceived in general to be more attractive (though few of their friends can pinpoint why they suddenly look so good.)

The cost of a dental makeover is small enough to make it a no-brainer for anyone looking to rejuvenate their appearance and self-image. From an economic perspective, most dental procedures cost far less than other cosmetic procedures, and most agree that – from a results perspective – the impact is dramatic, with the added benefit of being natural-looking and subtle. It is also worth noting that cosmetic dentistry costs far less in suffering than other forms of cosmetic enhancement. Cosmetic Dentistry is an outpatient treatment and recovery times are usually measured in hours – not weeks. This means that patients suffer little and realize the full potential of their procedures in as little as one visit. And because cosmetic dentistry is so safe and advanced, there is almost no risk of an unsatisfactory results.

While conventional plastic surgery is the standby for those looking to improve their overall appearance and feel better about themselves, the expense in time and suffering and the high risk of unsatisfactory results make it a tough sell, especially given the comparatively low cost of a dental makeover

A bright, youthful smile will make you look as young as you feel and feel as young as you look each time you smile. The increased confidence and sense of well-being derived from your new smile will give you even more reasons to wear it – results that no other surgery can reproduce.

Remembering our Heroes

Friday, February 13th, 2009

World War II was a monumental time in American history. The world depended on the American military to defeat the very heart of evil, a call America’s fighting men answered bravely. Without the services and lives of so many Americans, the world would have become a much darker place. Imagine if Hitler had been successful, as he likely may have been without America’s intervention. Because of the strength, courage and resolution of American bravery, evil was snuffed out. The tyranny of Adolph Hitler was left to the history books.

America’s legacy during the time of World War II is something to be remembered and cherished. This was the war of our grandfathers, fought so that we could be free. WW II medals are more than just artifacts of history. They are testaments to the legacy, the very fighting soul that shaped the world in the wake of the fall of Nazi Germany.

Whether you are a collector, a descendant of a World War II veteran, or a veteran of the hardest war this country has ever fought, WW II medals put you in touch with that history. You can become part of the legacy, touch it and feel it warm in your palm, as tangible as history can ever become without actually being there.

From history buffs to veterans to antique collectors, medals from World War II give you a connection to that history, allow you to hold it in your palm or attach it to a formal uniform that aligns you with the legacy. As time goes by, they will only accrue in value, becoming timepieces to a lost piece of American history. It’s a sign that we must remember the past so that the world is not condemned to repeat it.

Whether your in the Army, Navy, Marines, or Coast Guard, each branch had its part to play in the great conflict of World War II, its own story and piece of the puzzle to contribute. Honor the history of your particular branch of armed services and the sacrifices that were made during that difficult time in American history with a collection of World War II medals. We are all part of the legacy if we only choose to remember.

How it Got Started

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

The sport of mixed martial arts better known as MMA has exploded in popularity over the last couple of years and become part of mainstream culture. Today’s fighters use a combination on muay thai, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu jitsu. Most fighters are either known as a striker, meaning they are better on there feet, or as a grappler, meaning they want to take the fight down to the ground; but to be a true mixed martial artist a fighter must be proficient in both striking and grappling.

The very first MMA competition was an eight man tournament with very few rules with the winner receiving a $50,000 grand prize. The concept of this tournament was to face experts of different types of martial arts like Boxing, Karate, Jiu Jitsu, and Wrestling against each other to see which type of self defense worked the best. The competitors included Art Jimmerson a professional boxer with a 29-5 record, Teila Tuli a 400 pound sumo wrestler, and Gerard Gordeau a karate and savant champion.

The smallest competitor in the competition was 170 lbs Royce Gracie. Royce was a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or BJJ. BJJ was originated by his father Helio Gracie and Helio’s brother Carlos in their home country of Brazil. BJJ was a ground fighting technique that used submissions that attacked opponents joints like there elbows and knees and chokes on the neck to subdue or make them give up. Royce was able to use these techniques to beat much larger men them himself to win the tournament and to prove that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was the best fighting technique in the world. He would go on to win two more of these tournaments proving that it was no fluke.

Today BJJ is taught all over the world and is one of the most popular forms of martial arts. If you are interested in learning BJJ and attend The University of Texas check out the Texas Jiu Jitsu student organization. For the past several years Texas Jiu Jitsu has helped teach the art of BJJ to the students of UT. It is available to any student currently attending The University of Texas.

Custom Picture Frames

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Any artist knows that the best way to be sure a job is done right is to do it yourself.

Your art is your beauty, your craft honed to perfection. It needs nothing less than a perfect frame, customized to suit its unique size considerations. Your art should be embraced in a frame of professional elegance, a perfect specimen of taste and class.

The trouble is that most professional frame jobs are exceedingly expensive and way out of budget of an artist struggling to make do with limited resources. The truth is that framing your art yourself is easier than you think, and it can be done with a care and craftsmanship that suggests a level of professional sophistication. You can save money and still have your art look professional. The resources are inexpensive, as you can easily find a mat cutter and custom picture frames on the Internet at reasonable rates, often for much less money than you’d find in an art supply store.

Many of the mat cutters available on the Internet are designed for professional artists, crafters, photographers, and framers. With a parallel mat guide, as well as straight and bevel cutting heads, you can cut the mat exactly to your unique specifications. Professional art comes in all shapes and sizes, so it’s good to be able to create a look that’s unique to your art. The key is finding professional tools that go beyond the basics. Finding a professional mat cutter and custom picture frames with variety is easy with the Internet’s wide selection, often at considerably reduced prices too.

Not only can you find a wide selection of frames to meet your artistic needs, you can also find frame sealing tape and mounting equipment to better display the art. Arrange your art in a gallery without noticeable wires or unsightly glue that will stick to the display wall. Mount art in your own home or the homes of your friends with materials that won’t mar or damage the surface of the wall in any way.

Getting into framing is easy with the wide variety of framing supplies on the Internet. The wide selection makes it possible to frame every shape of artwork, and the openness of the on-line market makes it easy to find the materials on a limited budget. Frame your own art with a professional touch with rock bottom prices found on the Internet. Your art will look professional, and your limited budget can be saved for even more art supplies.

Upgrading is Easy & Affordable

Friday, February 6th, 2009

From the computer geek who wants to buy the requisite components of a machine and put it together himself to the casual user who wants to upgrade one aspect of his computer, computer parts are at the foundation of the build or upgrade. Such components are varied, from the “guts” of the computer, such as the motherboard, chipset, power supply and fan, to more easily accessed parts like memory sticks, video cards, sound cards, network interface cards (NIC) and a host of others. Regardless of whether you’re doing a simple memory upgrade or building a box from scratch, researching and purchasing the proper components is imperative.

Even more important is to make sure to match an intended video card, sound card or other hardware upgrade to the type of slots available on your computer’s motherboard. Among the types of video/graphics cards available are PCI Express, PCI Express 2.0, AGP, PCI and SLI video cards. A video card upgrade is particularly popular for many users as they upgrade their monitors or if they are into gaming. Some popular manufacturers include NVidia, EVGA, Diamond Multimedia, ATI Technologies and PNY, to name just a few.

Another popular upgrade that necessitates careful research of computer parts is a memory upgrade. It is important to first know how many memory slots are available on your computer’s motherboard before purchasing memory because the number of slots available will dictate how many memory “sticks” you buy as well as how much memory is available on each stick. Understanding the type of memory your computer takes is also of the utmost importance. Some memory types include DDR RAM, DDR-Dual Channel, DDR2 RAM, DDR3 RAM, ECC Memory, to name a few.

Those building a computer from the ground up require a greater number of components, ranging from the case itself to the motherboard, chipset, hard drive, etc. Those taking this approach have the luxury of purchasing what they consider to be the “best” products at each stage and can “mix and match” parts to make a super-machine of their choosing.

Finally, perhaps the most-purchased upgrades revolve around various so-called computer peripherals, which typically include printers, monitors, speakers, external hard drives, scanners, microphones, cameras, external network cards, etc. The trend now among desktop computers is to use widescreen LCD monitors that are sleek, take up little room on a table or desk, and come in much higher resolutions than their CRT predecessors. LCD monitors ranging from 17” to 23” are becoming fairly standard now, with more savvy users and technophiles often employing larger monitors and dual monitor displays via a KVM switch.
